Sizing Information

When investing in vintage or faux vintage clothing, it becomes immediately noticeable that the whole concept of 'Sizing' means practically nothing! 

Our original vintage clothing at Retro Daisy is measured across the bust from arm pit to arm pit whilst the garment is laid flat. We measure the smallest part of the waist and the widest part of the hips - unless it's a circle skirt and then the hips are known as 'free' 

That having been said… regardless of the numbers, if you love a dress - try it on! Often a dress can appear 'too small' and yet fit like a dream - it can also look 'too big' and shapeless on the clothes hanger and yet transform into the most beautiful and flattering dress when tried on - this is why we don't generally offer original vintage for sale on line. It's a very different experience to wearing modern  clothing and at Retro Daisy we believe you need to meet in person to decide if you're right for each other! 

Faux vintage can initially seem equally as complex, even a little demoralising at times, until you understand that a gorgeous Vivien to Holloway dress which may be a size 12 for example, actually comes closer to a High Street size 10. This is because Vivien of Holloway cut and adapt from original vintage patterns so therefore, they use vintage measurements for their sizing, as opposed to High Street stores such as Marks and Spencer who have increased their measurements since 2003 but have not increased their sizes! So for example as size 16 has risen from 38/31.5/41 to 39.5/33/43 and this is known as 'Vanity Sizing' 

It's not beyond the realms of possibility to leave the house in the morning a size 12 and return home in the afternoon after a shopping trip, a size 10 or even 16!
